St Catherine's School, Barton.
A Memory of Barton Upon Irwell.
I went to St Catherine's from about the age of 7 in 1958 along with my siblings. Some of my best friends were Sandra Humphries, who wanted to be a pop singer and I remember she had a great voice, Gillian Andrews, she also had a big brother at the school called Christopher and Lynn Wilkinson, her parents owned the sweet shop just over the bridge. The head teacher was called Mrs Willey, she taught the infants and the teacher for the juniors was Miss Leech. We also had a dinner lady called Mrs Wright. I have fond memories of being at St Catherine's although I can't remember doing any sort academic work.
We lived down Barton Road at Primrose Terrace.

Just come across this site. I was at St. Caths during last years before it closed for good. My name is Howard: very quiet LOL
Long time ago!
Names I haven't heard for many years, most remembered some sadly not. Howard Parry, I do remember as a quiet boy, a little younger I think. Shirley Mason, a bit noisy I recall! Julia Wood I should remember as I too lived on Peel Green Rd, No70.
As well as Wilkinson's Newsagent, which was over the swing bridge from school, there was also a little cabin next to the bridgemans hut, that sold sweets, or did I imagine that. I remember Mr Ribchester having to wheel Kevin Purcell home in a wheelbarrow after one of the schoo gates had fallen on his leg, I think it was broken. Sadly I don't do 'Social Meedja' but will look in here from time to time.
