Batley was the north's shoddy town: its prosperity came from the process of breaking down and reweaving woollen cloth from waste rags. The raw material came from as far afield as Berlin and Rotterdam. Between 1850 and 1880, the population of the town tripled. As it grew, fears were expressed that the local dialect might die out, so in 1860 a glossary was published containing local words and phrases. The Zion Chapel (1869) on the far right seated 600, and the Sunday School catered for 1000 children.

Rene Donnelly's Sweet Shop
Does anyone remember Rene Donnelly's Sweet Shop on the corner of Wilton Street & Bradford Road? I remember buying Smith's Crisps with the little blue packet of salt. There was a sign in the shop that read "Please don't ask for credit as a refusal often offends." Also the Little Wooden Hut was almost opposite on Bradford Road, we bought our fireworks there for Guy Fawkes night. It was owned by Mrs. ...see more

Rosie's Cheap Shop
I remember Rosie's cheap shop. My mum and dad used to shop there, there were some good bargains there. wish those times were back.

Rosie's Cheap Shop
I remember Rosie's Cheap Shop so well. I can actually picture Rosie now with her slight lisp. Did she not run the place with her son/sons. I also remember the 10 pence lucky bags from the market, and the sweet shop called the 'Talk of the Town'. I have such fond memories of Batley, but sadly haven't been there for 13 years.

Royal Hotel
Does anyone remember the Royal Hotel in Batley, it was on a corner I think of Bradford Road and a road that went up a very steep hill to a village. Lived there from 1963-1965 and went to Park Road School. Looking for a photo of the pub if anyone has one. Remember traffic lights being outside on the corner and a man that used to keep ferrets down his shirt and trousers when he came in for a pint.

However, if you would particularly like to buy one of these please get in touch quoting the Frith negative number,(s) the town name and size of print you would like to buy. On receipt of your enquiry our archivist will check the scan and advise you if the quality is good enough.

What is an Album?

An album is a way to save a selection of Frith photos, maps and memories that are of interest to you.

Creating an Album enables you to make short lists and then make a final selection from the album. In particular it makes ordering things like calendars much easier - simply create an Album of the 12 photos you like and then use the Album when placng your order - our order process will give you this option.

You can create as many Albums as you want, so perhaps make one for your hometown, where you live now, where your parents live now etc.
