Beaufoy Rd

A Memory of Battersea.

I was born in and lived in Beaufoy Rd from 1950 to 1966. Great memories of loads of mates, Runouts, Cowboys and Indians, football and cricket in the road as well as bonfires in the road on bonfire night. Remember the fire brigade having to put them out later on. Off Licence and phonebox at the bottom of street and chipshop at the top (Wiggy??) It seemed like a mile long. The courts the 137,45, 77, 77a and b. Walks to Battersea Park for messin about or Clapham Common for sport. Went to Shaftesbury Park School and remember the names of most of my teachers, from Mrs Aspinal, Mrs Maunder ( had serious crush on her) Mr Matthews, Mr Lampard, Mr Loftus the headteacher, Does anyone remember penny fritters from Robertson Street chippie. A half inch thick slice of potato in batter or a Wigwam lolly from the off licence. Am I right in saying it's been redeveloped twice. Tore down our slums, replaced them with new slums, then replaced them again?

Hi Janice, I lived at 112, I would have passed your door hundreds of times. The baker was Graingers (square tins, long tins, twists, points?) I think the shop across from there was Curlies, then Foxs just before the school, which had an open section to the side for fruit and veg. Remember Jenksies the tiny sweet shop on our side of the road? (sweets by the 2oz, and 4 fruit salads for a penny?) The thing I cant get any of my family to remember is from the off licence at the railway end, a lolly called a wigwam, shaped like a pyramid with a wrap round cardboard cover. Think it was pineapple flavour.
