To School At Highview

A Memory of Beddington.

This view from Plough Lane bridge was a daily sight for me and my 2 brothers and sister as we walked or later cycled home to Beddington from Highview school. [Another of Friths postcard shots]. The primary school was beyond the secondary school in the that shot. At the Beddington end of Plough Lane after hurriedly passing the cemetery --always haunted in our imaginations, was The Broadway [subject of yet more Friths shots]. Here I remember the postage stamps on the shop windows, some edged in black ink to morn the passing of King George the 6th and getting a 4inch splinter in my backside after sliding up a fence when my aunt arrived to help with my 5th birthday. Proof that the saying "no sense no feeling" is true was the fact that it was only discovered that night as mum put me to bed! Well done Croydon General the next day for the removal and stitches.
Playing in Beddington Park and walking by the Wandle to meet mum at the village Hall after she'd done her WVS stint passing out free concentrated orange juice , cod liver oil and dried milk to young mums. All are memories stimulated by other Friths shots; and that's not to mention the many holiday locations covered in the archives. So a big thank you.
