More about this scene
Bedlington was once the capital of Bedlingtonshire, and as a part of the County Palatine of Durham belonged to the Bishops of Durham until 1844. The parish church is dedicated to St Cuthbert in memory of a night in 1069 when monks escaping from Durham with the saint's remains sheltered here on their way to Holy Island to be out of reach of the Normans.
