More about this scene
A lace maker works at a floral sprig of Honiton lace outside her cottage door at Beer in South Devon. If the picture had been taken a few years earlier, her customer might have been Queen Victoria herself. The queen helped revive the Devon lace industry by making lace fashionable again; among her commissions was the flounce for her wedding dress, which was made by a hundred of the finest lace makers in Devon.
