More about this scene
Nothing demonstrates the wealth of Belfast more than its ability to build fine churches ahead of the press of growing suburbs. Elmwood church was built in 1859, and shared the open ground on that side of town with Queens College and The Institute for the Deaf, Dumb and Blind. At a safer distance across open fields were the grim blocks of the Workhouse. The design of the tower displays the hand of the amateur architect.
