More about this scene

Nothing demonstrates the wealth of Belfast more than its ability to build fine churches ahead of the press of growing suburbs. Elmwood church was built in 1859, and shared the open ground on that side of town with Queens College and The Institute for the Deaf, Dumb and Blind. At a safer distance across open fields were the grim blocks of the Workhouse. The design of the tower displays the hand of the amateur architect.

Sparked a Memory for you?

If this has sparked a memory, why not share it here?

My late husband Jim played the pipe organ in this church. Our eldest son, Mark, aged about 5 at the time, used to go with him and insisted on sitting on the console with him. Although we lived in the area during the troubles, we were sufficiently removed from it to be able to feel fairly secure.
