More about this scene

This building at Hazelwood was brand-new when the photograph was taken. It looks as if it was intended for Portrush, and is an enthusiastic example of the architecture of the time. It also reflects the social history of Belfast: to begin with, it was referred to as a concert hall, but to the young people of the next 25 years, it was a ballroom, and its isolation never detracted from its fame. They went to waltz, quick-step and fox-trot to orchestras which included violins as well as saxophones and trombones.
