Nostalgic memories of Belvedere's local history

Share your own memories of Belvedere and read what others have said

For many years now, we've been inviting visitors to our web site to add their own memories to share their experiences of life as it was when the photographs in our archive were taken. From brief one-liners explaining a little bit more about the image depicted, to great, in-depth accounts of a childhood when things were rather different than today (and everything inbetween!). We've had many contributors recognising themselves or loved ones in our photographs.

Why not add your memory today and become part of our Memories Community to help others in the future delve back into their past.

I was born in Croft Close 1961, at the top of Osborne Road. I decided today to have a look back at the area. I remember the Old police station which was turned into the driving school, I can remember my journey from Croft Close to go past Eric the green grocers, then there was a dairy- come-cafe. Lucas the paper shop, he used to always say 'what do you want' - I never went back much, my mum used to pay the paper ...see more
Hi all. I worked at Nuxley Road Garage from 1972 to 1984, owned by Keith Braddon. It seemed to be the hub of the village with all local shop keepers using the garage. A good friend of the garage was Brian who owned Jaques the Hairdressers, another was Frank Hadlow a local builder and J Ashton who was involved in football. I spent many good years in and around the village and have lovely memories, I still ...see more
I lived in a number of houses in the area starting with Elstree Gardens in Lower Belvedere, where I went to St Augustines. I remember winning a raffle and taking a bunch of flowers home to my mum and my first goal scored on their football pitch. I also remember my first kiss, but I am not going to say with whom. I guess this was early 60's having moved from Eastery nr Sandwich, Kent. My father was ...see more
My name is Jean Hall, nee Mathis, I was evacuated during the war to Sandon, Staffordshire, came back to Belvedere in 1946, but moved back to Sandon in 1947, when I was adopted by my foster family. I am researching my family tree and looking for three brothers, Malcolm, Monty and Peter Fisher, if anyone knows their whereabouts. Their father's name was Ed Fisher and their mum's name was Minnie Mathis. Any help anyone can give me would be appreciated.

My memories of my childhood in Belvedere are so precious. I was born in 1968, and my parents bought a house together with my paternal grandparents in Nuxley Road, number 86. The house is a big Victorian derached house between Narnfield Road and the car park. The house has sooo many fond memories for me, I have tears in my eyes as I write. We had the downstairs of the house and Nan and ...see more
I have two separate enquiries for my family history research in Upper and Lower Belvedere. In Upper Belvedere there was a sweet and paper shop which also sold toys called Derrett & Dorman's. I believe that I have a connection with either the owner or an employee who worked there in the late forties and early fifties. I think that their surname was either Adams or Back. In Lower Belvedere my ...see more
My great-grandfather was Edward Alfred Mannooch who owned the furniture shop at 28/30 Nuxley Road, Belvedere. After his death in 1954 aged 90 the business passed to two of his daughters - Frances Adelaide and my nan, Lily Priscilla who chose to sell toys in one half of the shop and china in the other. Frances (who was known as Flo) was very active in the village with groups such ...see more
