Because these forbidding, almost vertical cliffs are chalk, erosion through time from the sea and wind has left little 'pockets' in the cliff face, which make it an ideal situation for birds: indeed, it is the largest bird breeding ground in Britain. An estimated 200,000 birds of many different species nest here.
