More about this scene

The memorial seat commemorates the six agricultural labourers who met beneath the sycamore tree (centre) in 1834, and were transported to Australia for taking an illegal oath during an initiation ceremony for trade union membership. The view is eastwards from the village green to a range of 18th-century thatched cottages (right). The green was given to the National Trust by Sir Ernest Debenham in 1934 to commemorate the centenary of the Tolpuddle Martyrs.
