Here we have an early morning scene in a busy little village. Nine years after this picture was taken the road and these charming brick cottages would be under the administrative wing of the Greater London Authority. Today the traffic along this stretch is constant as motorists head towards the A2 to reach the capital.

I recall around the mid to late 1950's going down to Joydens Wood along a small lane off Vicarage Road. In the woods there were a number of deep holes or shafts dug into the sandy soil for a depth of about 20 feet or more. Does anybody remember going to the jazz festival at the Black Prince.
I can recall seeing trumpeter Ken Sims playing in an amateur trad band competition. He already had his own band as a pro, he asked me not to tell anyone and drop him in it. He didn’t win anyway.
Also Shorty and Them, singer was Van Morrison before he was well known, rude and nasty even then!!

We lived in the village from 1954-1964 before moving to Bournemouth. St Mary's Church was a centre of our social life...I went to St Mary's School in Bourne Road - now gone- also Sunday School. Later after the Evening Service we would go to the Institute opposite to Sunday night at 8. Bank Holiday Mondays the boys would organise a days hike into the countryside. My father, Luigi Cascarini, opened and owned The Silver Lounge from 1939 until he retired in 1966. All his family including my self (Maria) worked there for many years. I would love to know if anybody out there has a photo of the front of the shop. No one in the family as one. Maria Richardson
