Before They Put Numbers On The Years!

A Memory of Bexleyheath.

Gosh, I am so old, I remember the time that the trams (696 and 698) were changed for electric trolley buses of the same numbers. Does anyone but me remember the horse trough beside the clock tower?. before the war we lived in a tallj(five stories) house near the tower that has be demolished for the new set of roads. Right by the old Cinema. The owner had two one by the clock tower and one up the Broadway, later a bowling alley then a food store.

We were bombed out twice. Once from 22 St Audrey Avenue, then from a house in Old Bexley. We had to live in one room on Church Road, Welling, then in a flat over an empty store in Pickford Lane. I did notice on a recent trip back that the houses just to the North of Danson Park entrance that had a green area in front of them still had the (now covered in) air-raid shelters on that patch of green. I noticed that the old Crook Log is now a Carvery. No one knew what a "Crook Log" was.

I know live in a country town in Ontario and still visit from time to time. I now have white hair from the horrendous traffic in that area. Next visit with someone else driving will be in the Fall of 2015.
My Grand parents are buried in the cemetery behind St James' church.

Wild blackberries grew in the fields at the top of Gravel Hill, My old friend the Oak in Danson Park thrives though. Such a long time ago. George Rolfe email precinctman@gmail.com
