Shortmead Street School

A Memory of Biggleswade.

I was born in Biggleswade in 1947 and left for Suffolk in 1957. I remember going to the infants school and then shortmead street. We did maypole dancing and got hit over the knuckles regularly by horrible teachers! Pretty harsh conditions, freezing cold classrooms.
My mum Peg Davies worked in a dress shop in Shortmead Street so I could play with the jewellery and gawp at the beautiful dresses on my way home for dinner cooked by my gran. We lived in The Dells and spent hours crouchng in the railway tunnels getting filthy with soot from the steam trains. Dangerous games at the pig market by the rail sidings and sitting on the edge of the mill pit at Jordan's mill. I had a lovely childhood in Biggleswade, have been back once but I've loved looking at these old photos now I live right on the south coast. If anyone should remember me I was Jennifer Davies and please email me on bigwriting@hotmail.co.uk
