More about this scene
The small 7th-century church of St John the Evangelist is one of the finest examples of early Christian architecture in the North. Built largely from stone salvaged from the abandoned Roman fort at Binchester, St John's lay semi-derelict in the 1870s; it might well have been allowed to fall into complete ruin, had it not been for the Reverend R E Hooppell. It was he who recognised St John's importance and launched an appeal to save it. The long nave and narrow chancel are typical of Northumbrian ecclesiastical architecture. Later additions include a 12th-century porch and 13th- and 19th-century windows.
