Bishop's Stortford, South Street c.1955

More about this scene
Although the B1004 is called the High Street, it is South Street that provides the main shopping centre for the town. In 1955 there were cafes and tea rooms, confectioners and tobacconists, butchers and bakers. Today South Street contains building societies, banks, opticians, mobile 'phone stores and gift shops. Our photograph shows one bus and one bicycle: today it is a nose-to-tail stream of traffic, and strictly no parking.
