More about this scene
The parish church of St John was described as 'one of the architectural ornaments of the town', and the interior came in for much praise. In 1890 everything was new, as the church had been rebuilt about a decade earlier. The Roman Catholic church was designed by the famous architect Welby Pugin, and other places of worship were Holy Trinity at South Shore and Christ Church.
