Born A Blackrodian

A Memory of Blackrod.

I was actually born in the village at 328 Manchester Road and have so many happy memories of life in the village from 1962 the year I was born, until I left the area in 1978.
The open fields to the rear of Manchester rd looking towards Aspull in the distance, catching newts in the pond over the fields. Remember Marshall's Farm, Bennett's newsagents, my mother use to own the village greengrocers which I see is now a dwelling. My auntie owned the woolshop in the 1970,s also.
Sitting behind the high cemetery wall looking towards Rivington Pike with the diminishing steam trains running through the valley and Blackrod railway station before climbing it and walking through the graveyard scared witless to get home. Mr Banks driving his Rolls Royce silver cloud up the private rd opposite my house to go home.
The brick built bus shelter , Blackrod summer carnival which my father entered with our pony and trap dressed as a cowboy (hat ha)
My eldest sister was in the last year of Blackrod senior school before it changed to a primary school and I then entered education at the primary school sharing the same dinner lady. Most people new each other back then, wonder what it is like now.
So many great memories I could go on,
