More about this scene
This street was once called Heol-y-Nant (Brook Street) from the brook which ran through Blaenavon. In the days of the Depression, weekend shoppers thronged it until late at night in their search for bargains, espe- cially food. Briggs's men's wear shop (left) has now closed, ending the firm's involvement in the town from the late 19th century. The Forge Hammer beyond advertises Ansells beer; the pub was to close in 1956.
