More about this scene
Houses for the colliers were built around the pit which dominated their lives. The sound of the hooter at set times signalled the end of shifts, but when it sounded at an unusual time, it conveyed news of a pit accident. Since 1977 the Afan Burrough has undertaken reclamation works at the sites of the Avon and Scatton colliery and of the disused railway. They felt that the crumbling buildings and steeply sloping pits were apt to be used as playgrounds by local children, putting their safety at risk.
