To the north-east of Allenheads beyond Nookton Fell lies the village of Blanchland. It was here in 1165 that an Abbey Church was founded by the Praemonstratensian Order of monks. The Abbey featured more than once in the turbulent history of the North. A Scots raiding force attempting to find the Abbey had managed to get itself lost in a thick mist that had descended over the area. Thinking themselves delivered from the heathens, the brothers rang the Abbey bells in celebration. Guided by the bells, the Scots fell on the abbey which they then ransacked and burnt, killing a number of monks in the process.
