More about this scene
A large village, equidistant from Moreton in Marsh and Chipping Campden but not distant enough to develop into a market town itself, Blockley harnessed the water power of its deeply cleft valley early on in its history, and became famous as a silk throwing centre based on the Coventry ribbon trade in the aftermath of the woollen weaving depression. A hundred years ago, six mills employed some 600 people; today the buildings have been converted for other uses, and harmonise within the traditional village scene, the focal point of which is the Norman church with its 18th-century tower.
