More about this scene
Built in 1580 by the Nottage family, this was originally a fulling mill, though it was being used for corn by the 19th century. The wooden road bridge had to be replaced in 1926: it was rotting, and traffic was becoming heavier. There is a classical-style bridge of steel and stone there now, decorated with Bocking's armorial bearings.

My mother wrote her childhood memories about 10 years before she died in 1992. She was sent to Friars Children's Home for the sole purpose of working when she was 14 in about 1926. Late 1949 early 1950 I stayed with my mother, Mrs Dorothy Violet Lee (nee Gobbitt) at The Convent, Bocking. Born 1943 I would have been aged 6-7yrs. This isn't really a memory, but a request. As I was looking through my Mom's belongings, I found this same postcard. My Mom's name was Vera Snell and she was born on August 5, 1921. Sadly, she passed away on Dec 10, 2002. With no Catholic Church in Braintree in 1937, my late parents' wedding took place in November at the Bocking Convent.
