More about this scene
In 1744 a man by the name of John Shires discovered a saline spring, and thanks to the 18th-century fashion for taking the waters Boston Spa was born. Like most spas, Boston had its moment of glory, and for a few years was the place to seen. A stagecoach service operated on a daily basis from Leeds and back, and wealthy travellers using the Great North Road would stop over and sample the delights of the pump room.
