More about this scene
Dotheboys Hall was where William Shaw ran his notorious Bowes Academy, upon which Charles Dickens based Dotheboys Hall in his novel 'Nicholas Nickleby'. In the churchyard lies George Ashton Taylor, a former pupil of the Academy, who died aged nineteen. Dickens used the unfortunate Master Taylor as the basis for the character of Smike.
