This is the corner of the Bowness boating area used by rowing boats for hire, following the onset of mass tourism from the mid19th century. Particularly distinctive is the row of 'cushion huts' used by the various boat owners, so-called because their primary purpose was for the storage of the boat cushions when they were not in use. Oars are stacked against the fronts of the huts.
