Brampton, Naworth Castle c.1955

More about this scene

A minor 14th-century castle, Naworth stands on a triangular piece of land by the river Irthling with deep ditch defences on three sides and a moat and drawbridge on the fourth. During the Civil War Naworth was held for the king. The north-east tower is known as Belted Will's Tower, named after Lord William, who as Warden of the Marches took great delight in hanging wrongdoers from trees in view of the castle. On 10 May 1844 a serious fire destroyed much of the castle; it was later restored by Anthony Salvin.
