Nostalgic memories of Bridgend's local history

Share your own memories of Bridgend and read what others have said

For many years now, we've been inviting visitors to our web site to add their own memories to share their experiences of life as it was when the photographs in our archive were taken. From brief one-liners explaining a little bit more about the image depicted, to great, in-depth accounts of a childhood when things were rather different than today (and everything inbetween!). We've had many contributors recognising themselves or loved ones in our photographs.

Why not add your memory today and become part of our Memories Community to help others in the future delve back into their past.

I started work in Masters Men's Outfitters in 1967 straight from school. It was situated at 17-19 Caroline Street. I worked there till October 1969. Next door was Olivers the shoe shop and also in the same row was Stokes Men's Outfitters. This area of Bridgend brings back many happy memories.
Went to the college from Heolgam Secondary school when I was 16. Took shothand, typing and all office Business related studies was Dale Stanton then. Although I went to a secondary school I still managed to get my O and A levels here at the Technical College. Remember Mrs Malcolm what a teacher/lecturer she was fantastic. I think without her support I would have left college early as I wanted to earn some ...see more
I remember the Wyndham, boy did we have some good times there. The bar was very dark so we could get away with underage drinking as the staff couldn't see you properly! Friday nights were the best. I had my wedding 'breakfast' there when I married for the 2nd time in 1991 and it was fab. It's a shame things have to change and it has now become part of a chain but it is one of the oldest pubs still left in ...see more
My first dinner-dance! My boyfriend,Ted, became my husband and remained so until his death 3 years ago.
As an old Coity boy, I also worked in "Stampers".
I certainly remember Stuchbery's and went there once a year for the new school uniform with its felt hat and navy knickers. A great institution. Then I married the son of the owner and we called our second child Robin Stuchbery Turner. Please note correct spelling of this tricky name, I have nineteenth century business cards & notepaper in front of me. The Australian branch of the family had a slight change to the ...see more
I remember as a child going to Litchard school, it was a good school, it even had a swimming pool. I had some good friends and I always remember going to the shops for sweets, loads of shops there then. I lived in Litchard Park. I remember them building Wildmill, it was a nice place, state of the art whatever happened? We all used to play over the arsenel, there weren't many factories there then, no hospital ...see more
My family moved to Bridgend, as my father had a job with British Rail and could not cope with the shift work and travel to and from Chippenham. We moved to number eight Garfield Avenue and next door to Mrs O'Connell and her daughter and grandaughter, Jane Evans. We loved it as children. We went to the beach every weekend, and Sunday School, and there were sheep and ponies in our front garden eating mum's plants when ...see more
I remember in 1960 working as a conductor on the 'Western Welsh. My driver was Dai Williams, and my uncle, Danny Evans, was a driver, along with Ernie Sharrott. We had the best Solo card school in town, and I can say now at the age of 69, it was the best, happiest job, in my whole life. I live in Bristol now, but as an ex 'Cottage Homes boy' (1943 to !958) I still love visiting my brother Leslie and ...see more
