Bridgnorth, as a fortified hill-top site, dates from Saxon times. Visiting the town at the beginning of the Civil War, Charles I described the view from the castle ramparts as 'the finest in my kingdom'. Mind you, he was looking for finance from the locals, and so he may have been laying on the charm.
