More about this scene
This looks eastwards up West Street, with hand-carts and horse-carts, and plenty of activity in the Market Place, beside the Town Hall (right). Hurdles for animal pens are stacked behind the far trees. Market days were Wednesday and Saturday. Fairs, for cattle and cheese, took place on the first Wednesday in April and October.
