More about this scene
At various times between 1795 and 1840 the Corporation banned the use of the Guildhall for any type of meeting they considered to be Radical. As Bristolians had enjoyed free access rights to Brandon Hill since the 16th century, the Radicals simply held their meetings there, attracting large crowds; they were almost impossible to police.
