It was to this street, in 1793, that Joseph Storrs Fry moved his chocolate-making business. The business was founded by Joseph's father, who had come to Bristol from Wiltshire. Joseph Fry senior had been involved in a number of business ventures and partnerships, but as a Quaker the manufacture of chocolate was especially important to him, as it was a temperance drink.
