More about this scene

The village was created at the turn of the century to house construction workers for the very large brick-built Christ's Hospital school nearby. The famous poet Shelley was born at nearby Field Place. Broadbridge Mill is an ancient mill site by the River Arun. It was a prosperous business powered by two waterwheels that drove six pairs of millstones. Horsham Baptist Church used the millpond for baptismal purposes. The village is now cut off by the new Horsham by-pass that takes most of the traffic out of the village. The scene in the picture is still recognisable. The Shelley Arms half-timbered public house is nearby.
