Join The Navy And See Wiltshire
A Memory of Bulford.
In 1962, whilst in the RN, I was posted to a Joint-Service organisation at Erskine Barracks in Wilton. The Army said that they would provide temporary accommodation in Bulford for my wife and I. Knew it would not be the Barracks, I was amazed when, upon arriving at the Railway station in Salisbury to find that the GOC's driver was there to meet us and take us to Bulford. On arriving, we found that the accommodation was a wooden cabin/bungalow situated next door to Bulford Manor and opposite St. Edmund's church. The driver, Bill McKelvie and his wife lived nearby and made a point of making us welcome. We stayed there for 6 months (temporary?) until a flat was arranged in Manor Road, Salisbury. We stayed there for almost 2 years as it was my last posting in the RN.
We loved our time in the village, very friendly locals who introduced us to the delights of cider at the local club (more drank this than drank beer!!).
Even now I still have photos of the people and places associated with that stay and the lovely memories are still fresh some 60+ years later.
