Happy Memories Of Burnt Oak As It Was 1942 1957
A Memory of Burnt Oak.
I loved Burnt Oak as it was at that time.I started school at the Annunciation in 1942 with Kathleen Oatts and Irene Keech, they both lived in Langham Gardens. in 1948 I moved on to St Thomas's in Stanmore until1949 then I moved on to St.James's.I lived at 62 mostyn Road until 1957.I, like everyone there loved Toni's ice cream.I worked at genners sweet and toy shop on a Saturday whilst at school and sold 1penny ice cream cornets through a serving hatch to the outside of the shop.At the end of the day the money I earned I spent on sweets to take home, hence I have always kept the dentist busy.I loved Westaways on the corner of Barnfield, they sold lovely underwear and nylon stockings.Kamils ladies dress shop took a lot of my wages once I went to work, they sold really smart dress's etc.I also remember Gordons at the top of Watling Ave and just around the corner was Lanes, another smart ladies shop.On a saturday I used to go to "the Don" hairdressers for my "set" no hand held hairdryers at that time.I could just go on and on about Burnt Oak at that time and all the great people I knew that lived there, the likes I never known since. We always enjoyed ourselves when we went out anywhere,no cars,no TV,no mobile phones ,no house phones,no computers and no central heating, but the majority of the time we were happy and didn't get bored.I would loved to hear from anyone that remembers me or my brother John(6 years older than me)I married Don Keech in 1956 and went on to have twins,a boy and a girl and I have 3 grandchildren. My husband sadly passed away in 2013.He also had happy memories of Burnt Oak.I went back a year ago to my sister-in-laws funeral and was shocked how it looked,ROUGH.!!! Cars and rubbish in front gardens, that most people ised to take a pride in.I'M so glad I don't live there now.JEAN ATKIN ,OR ALAN AND GEORGIE KENT.,please get in touch, would love to hear from you.
