Mother Nursed There

A Memory of Bursledon.

I think this was the first year I can recall of my Mother being a nurse there. When she worked nights sometimes I stayed in the room on the top floor. She worked there for many years until it closed, sadly. It was for children who were recovering from various problems and sometimes as what we would now call a hospice. My mother loved working there and loved all the children that went through there. I remember the steam engine and at weekends when she was working I used to go with her to play with the children there. I remember it at a lovely old building but as time went on, the NHS just left it and it started to need lots of attention.

HI - I was also sent there at 13, after horrendous bullying at school and undiagnosed ADHD until I was 48, 4 years ago. I am writing a book and believe so many of us were there for emotional burnout and of course at that time none even knew about ADHD, OCD, Autism etc until after 2000 and would be keen to know if you realised you were neurodivergent?

Thanks

Hi

I knew the children there had problems. I think that’s why my Mother liked nursing there. She used to be so upset whenever a child passed away. I wasn’t a resident there, just the odd night when Mum was working nights with no one to look after me. I will say I always enjoyed playing with the other children there when at the weekends. I now have a Daughter who would have probably been there. ADHD, EUPD, anxiety and so it goes on. I think some of my Mother has rubbed off on me as I seem to be able to relax her when she is having a moment.

I think I have a photo of Mum at the hospital at home. If I can find it I will pop it to you if you want.
