More about this scene
Here was the Hospital of St Mary and St Lazarus of Jerusalem, founded by Robert de Mowbray in the mid-l2th century. It was the premier leper colony in medieval England, with a master, eight brothers and leper brethren. Extensive earthworks on the south-west side of the village mark its site. The ironstone church has a slightly odd saddleback double bellcote, but the churchyard exhibits a number of good headstones, including one to Mary Blower of 1781 by Christopher Staveley, a Melton Mowbray builder, with a lovely relief of Charity. The spectacular monument in the photograph was erected to weaver William Squire in 1781.
