The Hole In The Wall

A Memory of Bury St Edmunds.

Way back in the 50's I had not been long in Bury where I had arrived to join the staff in the Borough Offices on Angel Hill. It was Armistice Day, and the Councillors and senior staff paraded to the Cathedral for a service..On the way we passed the two large guns of the Artillery paraded facing the Abbey Gate. Hats were doffed as we went past them in salute and again as we returned to the offices for a little refreshment with the Mayor.. The party included top brass from the Forces ,including he Americans from Mildenhall. Whilst chatting with one of the Colonels, he expressed concern at the large guns and I told him I was surprised that they had repeated the exercise as at a previous parade, one gun had accidently fired and the gap in the top of the Abbey wall was the result !! Eventually the penny dropped and the story was spread to the amusement of all present !
