More about this scene
THE STRAND has always been at the heart of the town, where people met to trade as well as socialise. The market was central to the town's economy for centuries. The large area was also the scene of many public meetings, parades and civic ceremonies. The road sweeps past the Lansdowne Arms Hotel and, before the A4 road widening, it curved gently up the High Street past imposing shops and banks. The elegance of the Georgian coaching inn was always slightly at odds with the functional Victorian indus- trial red brick factory of Harris's opposite.
