1970s Calverley

A Memory of Calverley.

My name is Lindsey Lewis (nee Overend). I was born in Horsforth 1971 and my parents, along with my two sisters, moved to Clarke Street in Calverley from Bramley when I was two weeks old. We were the first occupants of number 21 on the new build row of houses. My bedroom overlooked the old hall. I remember seeing the sky lit up by the fire which destroyed part of the market hall in Leeds city centre, from my bedroom window, in the mid 70's. I remember mum trying to leave me at playgroup which was situated in the lower part of the mechanics building, but always had to come back and get me. The moose's head (or was it a deers head) above the entrance door used to frighten me to death! I have many memories of playing around Calverley, down the ginnels and snickets near the brownie hut (as well as attending brownies there), playing around the old garages next to the legion hut, which has since been replaced by houses, and bonfire night at the canine club next to Calverley church (my mum and dad were married at the church in 1965 and have just celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary). Fun times in Calverley park playing on the 'long boat' and 'umbrella' which would now be banished in an instant by safety officers! I attended park side school until the age of 8 when my parents decided to move to Whitby and then Robin Hoods Bay where we holiday'd up until that time. I am now 44 and now live close to Scarborough with a family of my own.
