So Long Ago

A Memory of Camberwell.

I was born in Fleetwood in 1936 and lived there until 1959 when I left to emigrate to Australia. I was brought up in Byron St living with my parents George and Dolly Arkwright ,I attended Blackinston primary school then moved to Chaucer Rd school finishing up at Bailey school . I started work working for the North West Gas as an apprentice gas fitter but left after 18 months so as to work for my dad in his car body repair business called Ace Services situated at the back of Kemp St . Growing up I had lots of friends the main ones being ,Tony Edwards, Les Hall , Roy Knights Stafford Ellis and many more , the first love of my life lived in Lindell Rd and will only identify her as J.W.
My dad and his partner Stan Cheetham were responsible for setting up the "Save for Britton " saving campaign during the war which was a mural on the Lord Street school wall showing a plane flying from London to Berlin and for every pound saved the plane was moved closer to Berlin ,I wonder how many people alive today remember that .
I remember many Sat nights dancing at the Marine Hall to Ted Heath , Jonny Dankworth and many more ,great times to remember ,never been back for a visit but maybe one day . Ron Arkwright.
