More about this scene
Cambridge's first women's college started out in Hitchin in 1869, and moved to Girton three years later - sufficiently far removed from Cambridge and the temptations of its male students. But while these red-brick buildings offered women a higher education, it was to be another twenty years before women became entitled to receive degrees.
