The Cathedral 1888 A springtime photograph of the massive and imposing cathedral, the first in Britain and the seat of the Primate of All England, as well as one of Europe's most celebrated places of pilgrimage. It was begun in 1070 by Archbishop Lanfranc, with the central Bell Harry tower being completed in 1500 and the north-west tower added between 1831 and 1840; this picture gives an excellent impression of the grandeur of the 188- foot long nave, which soars to a vault eighty feet above.

Not Beer Cart Lane
This picture is actually of All Saints Lane. My wife and I lived in the furthest timbered cottage from 1958 to around 1964. The cottage was originally two small cottages and as a consequence it had two stair cases each leading up to a single bedroom. Canterbury, St Stephen's Church Interior C1888
There are several dating features on both this print and subsequent ones and inspection of the church today that suggest that the photograph is probably correctly dated at 1888.  The pews shown were installed in that year, replacing an earlier box version.  A memorial tablet on the wall in commemorating the life of a local lady who died in 1888 does not appear although it is present ...see more

The Present Day Hospital.
St John's Hospital is home to 35 elderly people. 24 live in the older part. There are 6 houses each holding 4 flats. House six can be seen in the photo, it stands alongside the hospital chapel. The chapel is used twice a week by the residents. Despite over 20 years’ work on the archive, these scans have still not been individually checked and may prove to be damaged, faded, or not of sufficient quality to ever be offered in our full product range. However, if you would particularly like to buy one of these please get in touch quoting the Frith negative number,(s) the town name and size of print you would like to buy. On receipt of your enquiry our archivist will check the scan and advise you if the quality is good enough.

What is an Album?

An album is a way to save a selection of Frith photos, maps and memories that are of interest to you.

Creating an Album enables you to make short lists and then make a final selection from the album. In particular it makes ordering things like calendars much easier - simply create an Album of the 12 photos you like and then use the Album when placng your order - our order process will give you this option.

You can create as many Albums as you want, so perhaps make one for your hometown, where you live now, where your parents live now etc.
