More about this scene
St Mary Street is one of the city's main thoroughfares, where shoppers and visitors could find the finest hotels, theatres and department stores, all built in a grandiose manner. Here we can see a range of mid to late Victorian architecture. The road is unsurfaced, but the tramlines are clearly visible—there is a tram in the distance. This is a busy scene, with milk churns on one side of the street and casks of ale on the other (right). Note the various horse-drawn vehicles.
