In the background are the ruins of Bolton Castle. Sir Richard Scope's formidable 14th-century castle commands extensive views over his estates in lower Wensleydale. Although it was slighted by Cromwell's forces after a year-long siege in 1644-45, the substantial ruins are still impressive, and open to the public.
