This early photograph of Castleton at the head of the Hope Valley shows the intricate network of drystone walls which surrounds the village. In the background (left) is the 'Shivering Mountain' of Mam Tor, so called because of the frequent landslips which occur on its east face. Beneath it is the old road to Chapel en le Frith, which is now closed to traffic.
