More about this scene

When William Montacute, Earl of Salisbury, was appointed First Lord of Man he chose Castletown for his capital. Montacute strengthened the fortress defences, adding a new tower on the eastern side and a twin-towered gateway. Later 14th-century improvements included a curtain wall and the heightening of the keep. The glacis was added by Cardinal Wolsey in c1540 while he was serving as a trustee for the underage Earl of Derby.
