Doodlebug In Catfield

A Memory of Catfield.

I was home from school on holiday when I heard a noise in the night. It was the sound of a Doodlebug engine stopping. Next morning we heard that a Doodlebug had crashed just beyond Catfield Station and went to see it. The army were there guarding it, we saw it in the field, it had not exploded. Does anyone else remember this event?

I syayed in catfield when I was 14 years old, with my friend gill Woodford. We stayed for the whole six weeks summer holidays going up on the train with our bikes. That would be around 1970. We had a fantastic time riding all round norfolk places like wroxham potter heigham. We loved riding max the horse from the farm up the road. Brilliant time best summer hols from my childhood.
My grandfather James Peake was manager at the station nurseries. The hole from the Doodlebug was in the field behind. As part of the rockery for many years was the nose cone and various pieces of the doodlebug after it had been blown up.
