More about this scene
The lane past Fountain Cottage leads to the quiet surroundings of All Saints' Church. The old water fountain on the right tells us: 'Whosoever drinketh of this water shall thirst again, but who drinketh of the water that I give him shall never thirst.' Just outside the village is the 18th-century Cannon Hall, owned by the Spencer-Stanhope family. Designed by John Carr of York, it is set in 70 acres of parkland. Sold to Barnsley Council in 1953, it is now a wonderful assemblage of formal gardens, a farm, a museum and an ornamental lake.
