Happy Memories

A Memory of Cefn Mawr.

My mother was brought up by a lady called Alice who married Joshua Roberts in Cefn Mawr and relocated to Middleton in Lancashire. Alice had a lot of relations still living there including a cousin Bertha who married Idris Jones. They lived in Stephens Terrace , High Street opposite a detached red bricked house and I visited there many times as a child, distinctly remembering the smell of the Monsanto works. My mother's name was Babs Roberts and she would often talk about growing up with all the Jones children, Phyllis especially. Other relatives were an Aunty Maggie who lived at the top of Cefn with daughters Milas and Nancy ,who went to live in Cae Coch when they were newly built. Nancy married Alec Cunningham (in the RAF) they had a son Peter, and in later years ran the local club house. I also remember Brian Jones who also lived in Cae Coch.
Aunty Bertha worked at The Royal Hotel in Llangollen and died in 1965. Years later, we took Mum to see the area and sadly Stephens Terrace, which originally had a ginnel leading to a courtyard, had been demolished.
